Guys, why have we stopped printing photos these days? I remember back in the day (waaay back) when we used to develop every single spool of film and then eagerly march around the shops while we waited the one hour for them to be developed. I loved it! Modern technology means that we can capture great pics so much more easily, but the flip side is that we just don’t get around to printing them. Digital albums are great, but I know I’m not the only one who has wept over lost photos when a phone has been stolen, when digital files have somehow been corrupted or when your hard drive has crashed. I say, ‘Let’s bring back the printed photo that will stand the test of time!’ Yes, that’s what I say.
“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”
― Karl Lagerfeld
Legend has it that on this day, exactly one week before the beginning of summer, Greek mathematician, scientist and scholar, Archimedes, discovered while taking a bath that an object’s volume could be accurately measured by being submerged in water! Unable to contain his excitement, Archimedes leapt out of the bathtub and yelling “Eureka, Eureka!” as he ran through the streets of Syracuse, Greece.
Bath time has always been a highlight of the day in our home and I look forward to it too because despite the inevitable wild splashes (and sibling squabbles), the kids are contained and they’re getting clean! It’s a fun, watery play pen. Our kids love playing with their plastic tea set and they have an assortment of bottles for decanting and pouring. Water play is a great way to learn the basic properties of physics such as empty/full, float/sink, heavy/light, and cause and effect all while having fun in the tub. (more…)
Kids Emporium is one of the reasons that I’ve wished that money grew on trees – their product range is so carefully selected, beautifully made and creatively designed. In my early days as a Mom I splurged on a Sophie the giraffe which was worth every single cent – she’s been munched on by two of my teething littlies and is still so popular in our home that I often have to break up a squabble over ‘MY Sophie.’
Sigh, kids. Anyway, if you’ve shopped at Kids Emporium before and have your eye on something special, then this competition is just for you! Scroll down to view some of the top sellers (for some shopping inspiration if you win) & for competition details.
Isn’t there something so addictive about buying and selling things online? There is also something very satisfying about finding a really good deal. Just this last week we sold our dining room table to make space for a new-for-us table that has been passed down through the family. It sold in less than a week thanks to Gumtree.
I am always so impressed at how easy it is to sell something on Gumtree and how punctual potential buyers usually are. To be safe, my husband deals with the queries and we use his work location on the Gumtree ad. In the past I have bought a compactum, a cot, an outside table and rented two flats through Gumtree. I’ve also sold my trusty old Tazz on Gumtree. That was a sad day.
It’s easy for me to get a bit carried away scrolling through the Gumtree ads online and creating a wish list of items for the house and for the kids but today I decided to have a squizz and see if I could find anything suitable for my almost 5 year old for his birthday. This is what I found, what do you think?
Hand-illustrated foxes and zebras dash across pages alongside landrovers and bicycles, sparking imagination in young hearts and minds with a hint of adventure and a touch of whimsy, while carefully chosen words tell little ones that they’re loved and valued.” – Bright Owl
Today I’d like to introduce this beautiful little company – Bright Owl Paper Goods to you! It was created by fellow Heart Mama, Elke Dunaiski, who used her graphic design skills to start her paper goods business in anticipation of being able to work from home when she became a Mom.
Fast forward a few short years and not only has Elke’s business and family grown with the arrival of her daughter in July last year, but the Bright Owl team has also expanded to include prospective adoptive Mama, Celeste, who is paper pregnant and waiting to be matched with her little one.
I love how Heart Mamas flock together and love the fresh creativity of these two ladies – scroll down to see for yourself: (more…)
As a white Mom of three black children, it is so important that I know how to care for my kids’ hair. It’s been fun learning and I’ve got a way to go, but that scene in Grey’s Anatomy where Bailey gives McDreamy a (very) hard time for bringing Zola to school with unkempt hair haunts me to action. I don’t want to be THAT Mom!

How many times do you swoon over perfect Pinterest nurseries and wish that you could source such beautiful items in SA? Well, I know I’m not alone in this and so I recommend that you take a peek at this beautiful website right this very second.
Cape Town Moms, this place is a a well kept secret. If you haven’t already discovered Franky’s Diner in Sea Point, let me tell you about this treasure – you can get comfortable in a red leather booth, sip on a speciality milkshake (or a glass of wine) and watch the kids run wild in the fantastic play area. And kids eat for FREE on Mondays to Thursdays between 12pm and 8pm. What’s not to love?
We were feeling brave and so ventured out with the three little ones for a Friday night adventure to Franky’s Diner in Main Rd Sea Point last. We may have arrived 45 minutes behind schedule in the middle of load shedding with a handful of hangry kids, but all was redeemed when the kids saw the play area and balloons. We plonked ourselves down in the booth closest to the play area and ordered some drinks and food for the kids. The kids’ food arrived so quickly and Ilan’s bubblegum milkshake seriously saved the day.
