Last week I took my vegetarian self (and a lovely vegetarian-friendly friend) to the Fry’s Vegetarian Cooking evening at Ginger & Lime Food Studio – an interactive cooking school that hosts evening courses in a beautiful home in the heart of Fresnaye. After fighting the traffic in Strand Street to get there (almost) on time, we were welcomed into the dining room with a glass of wine and some vegan sushi platters. It felt as though we’d stepped into a close friend’s dinner party, except that we didn’t know a soul. The place was filled with excited chattering of guests eagerly anticipating an evening of fine dining.

After our sushi starter we stepped into a bright modern kitchen and took our seats centered around the large kitchen counter. Denise, our host for the evening kick started the evening describing her passion for food and then we had the chance to introduce ourselves to each other. As per usual I felt in the minority confessing that I was a vegetarian, although this time it was because I was only vegetarian and not an all-the-way-vegan like the majority of the other guests. (Did you know that you can make vegan bacon? Apparently it tastes just like the real thing…)

Next up was the remaining five courses of our six course meat-free menu. The best thing about Ginger & Lime is that you can be as involved in the dinner prep as you’d like to be – you can either roll up your sleeves and get cooking or you can sit on your bar stool and observe proceedings as you sip your wine and chat to friends. Sarah and I decided to get involved and learnt how to fold some dumplings the proper Taiwanese way and then we were put on frying duty. I found the jovial, yet calm atmosphere quite incredible – our hosts were happy for us all to wander between the different food stations (probably getting in their way as we did) yet were able to pull magically pull ingredients together to serve each course for the whole group so effortlessly.

Thank you to Denise, Paula & team Ginger & Lime for a fantastic night out!

Gosh each meat-free mouthful was so jolly delicious. We enjoyed (clockwise): Fry’s Battered Prawn Style Sushi, Fry’s Chicken Strip Skewers with Satay Sauce, Fry’s Meat Free Mince Dumplings and Fry’s Asian Coconut-Lime Broth with Fry’s Chicken Strips. Have you ever seen so much meat-free goodness all in one photo?

Click here to see upcoming courses on offer – the next Fry’s Vegan evening is on 14 April, but there are so many other course on offer too. Top tip: Consider Ginger & Lime is an  option to host a special private party or bachelorette evening. Fry’s spoilt us with some vouchers to pick up some of our favourite Fry’s products and try the recipes at home. I just love how the Fry’s range has grown and that there is more choice for vegetarians these days.
