I met Debbie at the Arise Adoption Conference last year and heard some of her story then, but today she shares it all in this interview. Hats off to this Heart Mama of three young ones! Thanks for sharing your story, Debbie.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.

I am a single working Mom, to the three most gorgeous kids in the world! I’m a doctor in a government clinic, so life is pretty busy most of the time. My daughter is 5 and my twins are 3. They all came home to me in the space of three months almost three years ago. Two totally spoilt dogs make the complete picture! Continue Reading

Karabo is a working Heart Mama who became a Mom through adoption. After a four month screening and placement process, four month old Dwala joined their family. Dwala is now almost four and may be a big sister soon! Thank you for sharing your unique story with us, Karabo.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.

My name is Karabo and I’m married to Bheki. We have been married for six years but we’ve known each other for more than 10 years. We have a soon-to-be four year old daughter, Dwala. We are a family of three, who have recently suffered the loss of a second adoption. Continue Reading

Take your kids to the top of the world with the Table Mountain Cableway #KidzSeason special

KidzsSeason

Today we took a trip up Table Mountain for the launch of the annual 3-for-1 #KidzSeason special. Two kids ride for FREE with an adult who has purchased a return ticket from the Lower Cable Station – a real win if you have a kid or two! This offer runs until 30 September and is valid on weekends, public holidays, and during the June/July school holidays. (From 1 June 2016, tickets for the #KidzSeason special will be available online but for now they need to be purchased from the Lower Cable Station.)

BONUS: As a part of the Kidz Season experience, all children will receive a treasure hunt map which includes vouchers for treats that can be redeemed from the  Shop at the Top and the Café.  Our kids loved handing over their vouchers and ‘buying’ their fruit dainties and sweets. If I’m completely honest, that’s the very first thing we did when we got to the top of the mountain because when your kids are all under five then a good family outing is all about the snacks, and less about the view. Blue Downs Mom to 26 vulnerable children wins Clicks Mom of the Year

Clickscollage

Saturday saw a few of us bloggers celebrating with Clicks and their Mom of the Year winner, Emma Makhatini at the glorious Vineyard Hotel. Ma Emma is a sprightly 70 year old Mom to her own children as well as 26 vulnerable children ranging in age from 2 to 16 years. Her project in Blue Downs, Emthembeni Children Care was established in 1990 when Ma Emma’s husband passed away and she started opening her home to children in need. Needless to say, she’s never looked back! As is this isn’t enough Emthembeni is financed largely by her own pension. Without government funding, Emthembeni is reliant on sporadic donations and a whole lot of prayer.

Ma Emma walks away with the grand prize of a car from Chevrolet South Africa worth R145 000, an accommodation spoil from City Lodge Hotel Limited and some hampers from Netflorist and GNC South Africa. The best part is that Clicks have committed to being involved in Emma’s story going forward – high five Clicks! Continue Reading

Meet the Mama – Karen Apsey: an adopted Heart Mama who grew her family through adoption

Apsey 15

Karen’s story is particularly special because she has experienced adoption in a way that most Heart Mamas have not – she was adopted into her own family as a child and has also chosen to grow her family through adoption. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Karen.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.

Justin and I have been together since we were 19. We love the outdoors and the beach. We are in the process of moving to Nairobi for Justin’s work on a three year secondment.  I am a school teacher but full time mom for now.  We have two biological children, Jess and Matt and have adopted our third child, Ben.
