Our family were invited to visit Windfall Guest Cottages in Robertson for a long weekend a little while ago. Although I shared our wonderful experience there on social media, I haven’t yet posted about our trip here on the blog. This is largely due to the fact that our weekend was such a necessary and timely change in pace for our busy family that I managed to pick up a cold on our third day there and succumbed to feeling generally run down.

We absolutely loved our time at Windfall and befriended a Dutch couple who were ending off a big South African holiday with a large investment in rooibos tea and a few days in Robertson. The Windfall cottages are comfortable and quaint – it’s not luxury living but it’s perfect for a weekend away to the country. We stayed in Mendola which is a family unit to sleep four – a queen bed in the main room and two single beds in the second room. They agreed to make room for our three kids by setting up an extra mattress in the kids’ room.

The linen and towels are really good quality, the shower is beautiful, there are ceiling fans in the rooms and the kitchen boasts a Jamie Oliver frying pan. It’s that kind of place. The kitchen area is small but that’s because the ‘living area’ is the large covered stoep outside. We were glad to have packed our own french press to make coffee and wish we’d taken some camping chairs to sit out on the balcony for early morning coffees and sundowners with spectacular sunsets. That said, the french doors leading out from both rooms mean that the view could be admired from the comfy queen sized bed, which is where I’ve been known to do my best relaxing.

The kids loved the freedom of the place and there was plenty for them to do – swimming, the jungle gym, the trampoline and just general running around (they especially loved running around in the the sprinklers). We went for two family walks – one to the nearby vineyards and one on the dirt road towards the drought stricken dam. The kids got dirty, collected sticks and sparkly stones and enjoyed helping dad make fires.

We popped into Robertson once as we need to do a small grocery shop, but if we went again we decided we wouldn’t make any plans to leave the accommodation. It was so peaceful there and sometimes a family just needs a break from driving around in the car and going places where the kids need to look respectable. Scroll down for some pics from our stay.

Nestled in the Agterkliphoogte Valley lies Windfall, a small boutique wine farm and one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Just look at this setting.
We stayed in Mendola, the closest cottage to the pool – it was a win for us.
Kids and trampolines.
The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular and we had a front row seat from our cottage.
The kids jumped at the chance to help Ryan build and stoke fires – we braaied every day that we were there. Roosterkoek for lunch, braais and boerie rolls.
Family holidays are for board games.
My favourite pic from the weekend, snapped by Judah.
The vineyard next to the cottages.
The same vineyard.
A walk in the dry riverbed was a fun adventure.

We had a truly fantastic getaway at Windfall Guest Cottages and think you’ll love it too. You can book online through various online booking platforms – take a look here as a start.

Oh, and their wine is pretty good too! You should try it. Wine tastings at Windfall Wine can be pre-booked ahead of time.
