Have you heard about the local company, Swimma, that is taking the world by storm? Swimma was started by local Cape Town mom and entrepreneur, Nomvuyo Treffers, who wanted to create swimming caps and shower caps specially designed for diverse hair types and volumes. Her brand caters for women, men and kids with afros, braids and dreadlocks, filling a very wide gap in the market.
I’m so grateful for Swimma because since Kira got braids for the first time recently, her hair no longer fit into an off the shelf swimming cap. And although we’re still in the middle of winter and in a drought stricken Cape Town, we’ve been taking our kids to the gym to keep their swimming up and Swimma came to the rescue. When you have lots of hair and tie it into a bun to put a cap on, you’ll find that most caps will keep popping up to expose your ears when you’re in the water. Not with Swimma! The larger size of their caps also mean that you can avoid unnecessary breakage of your hair when you pull the cap off after a swim.
Kira wears the afro-tots size but there is a whole range available that covers sizes for little kids to afro-superlarge. The caps are extremely well made of high quality thicker silicone and you can purchase them online here or you can check out the website for details of local stockists (worldwide shipping options available). The Swimma swimming caps retail from R110 to R150 and the shower caps sell from R145 to R185. Both the swimming caps and the shower caps come in a whole host of colours but you can guess that Kira chose the pink and purple options!
Here’s Kira in her afro-tots swimming cap in purple. This little girl is a fish in the water.
Such a great product, proudly South African
