What a spoil! We just got back from a few days of glorious fresh sea air and spectacular sunsets at the loveliest place called Greystones Beach House in Langebaan. It was one for the memory bank.

This spot sleeps 8 in four double rooms and is four star-fancy, yet family friendly and comfortable too. The linen is crisp and the lawn is spongy and soft (perfect for some rough & tumble play) and resident housekeeper, Yolam, who lives on the property, pops in every morning to open up the wooden shutters and to help you stay on top of any cookie crumbs on the floor. Built in the 1920s as one of the first homes in Langebaan, Greystones Beach House has been in the family for five generations and combines old world elegance with all the conveniences of today. The house retains many of its original features including Oregon pine floors, high ceilings and thick granite walls that provide both character and relief from the summer heat. The kitchen is fully equipped but it’s a fully self-catered guest house – so keep that in mind when you pack your food for your stay.

The veranda overlooks the lagoon and the back gate opens up to a short 300m walk to the beach with perfect swimming conditions for kids – teeny tiny waves, even when it’s a bit windy. Having the beach out the back door was the highlight for the kids, for sure and there is a variety box of beach toys including buckets, spades and balls for guests to make use of. There is a braai in an enclosed sun room so if the wind picks up you can still enjoy some outdoor time with a view.

Greystones is perfect for a family getaway for a number of reasons:

  • Close to the beach
  • Spacious, private garden
  • Kids’ wooden table and chairs on the veranda
  • Foosball table for some family fun
  • Outdoor seating covered in easy to wipe fabric so you don’t need to stress about spills
  • DSTV and wifi if your kids need some screen time so you can enjoy a lie in or a quiet morning coffee outside
  • And speaking about coffee, there is a coffee machine!

That said, this place definitely isn’t only suited for a family getaway – it’s just nice to know that a luxury spot like this is family-friendly for those of us with kids. Scroll down for some photos of our stay.
