Many of you who have been following this blog know that I am constantly on the lookout for dark skinned dolls for my kids because I am a firm believer that representation matters. I’m pleased to say that Mattel has embraced diversity and that they expanded their range this year to include a more diverse range of dolls with varying skin tones and body shapes.

The Fashionista line includes 23 dolls with eight different skin tones, 14 different facial structures, 22 hairstyles, 23 hair colours, and 18 eye colours.

Our boys play with dolls, and we’re cool with it. Admittedly, they play in a very different way than Kira – lots of tackling and stomping (and going to the toilet!)
Thanks to Mattel our dolls house is more colourful these days.

This is good news! Even better news is that I have two Barbies to give away, just in time for Christmas!

First prize: Barbie Musician Doll & playset valued at R450.00

Barbie musician doll comes with a guitar and a keyboard, plus other accessories, to spark imaginations. She has fully articulated arms and legs in order to hold the guitar and sit on the keyboard bench. The pink guitar also has a detachable strap for practice or performance.

Second prize: Barbie Fashionista curvy girl valued at R200.00

  1. My son’s name is Charlie, and although he will definitely be encouraged to play with dolls, he’s still very little. I’d actually like to win this for a lovely 8-year-old girl named Amahle. I recently bought her a book with a black princess, and she was so chuffed. It was one of the first things she owned that she could see herself in. She loves Barbies, but doesn’t have any black ones, so I’d love to win this for her.

  2. My son Tshepo, but if we win we will give the doll to his sister. ThAnks for your awesome blog. I may look for the male doll.

  3. My little girls name is Eugenie Maré Trinity Skriker . She just lost a Barbie to her jack Russell pup Nala that chewed the hands and feet off

  4. This would be my little Safiya’s first Barbie! She is 2.5 years old and it would make tge perfect gift for her. She has been off breastmilk for a whole week and what a huge reward this would be

  5. Zuri means beautiful in Swahili and we are always encouraging our daughter to see the beauty in her natural hair and deep skin tone… These Barbies are beautiful! Little Zuri would adore them.
